Mrs. Harris, my sixth grade teacher at Flower Hill Elementary School in Huntington, LI NY, was a fearsome, intimidating presence. She had a passion for poetry and every Monday would write out a poem on the blackboard. My class dutifully copied it out and the following Friday we each had to recite it from memory. This was one of the first I learned. Another was an excerpt from William Cullen Bryant's translation of The Odyssey.
